November 10
First, I forgot to mention in the Ship's Log that yesterday within a few
hours of leaving Musket Cove our reefer packed it in. The raw water
(cooling) pump stopped pumping. We cannot determine the reason.
Fortunately due to NZ quarantine laws we were preparing to defrost the
freezer and either eat or dispose of all the meat and frozen food. NZ does
not allow any frozen or refrigerated meat or any produce at all to enter
the country for fear of introducing some new germ or something. The boxes
(fridge and freezer) should stay very cold for many days and we will eat
in the natural order which things defrost. We will certainly have no cold
drinking water or cokes however within 2 days.
Last night we made good time in very good conditions. The seas were 3-5ft
and the wind was 14-18k first from the SSE and SE, then ESE then finally
ENE till this morning the wind was firmly in the NE. With wind from the SE
we were close reaching in 12-14k and making 8k over ground. Later, with
the wind from the ESE we were making about 7.5k in 15-17k and by dawn we
were making only 6-6.5k in 12-15k from the ENE. At dawn we let out the
reef in the main and as the wind came back a little to the East again (it
is now coming from Due East) we have a better angle and are making 7k over
ground in 14k wind. The seas are about 5-7ft with an occasional sea larger
and the sky is very clear with perhaps 25% cloud cover.
At noon today our distance covered since noon yesterday is 166miles. Not a
bad first day. We sailed easily all day in 11-14k from the East making
6-7.5k. It is now 7:30pm and we have 12-14k wind from the ENE. The
apparent wind is 50 degrees off the bow and we are close reaching at 7-8k
in calm seas with a 3-5ft swell. It is dark out now of course and the moon
will not rise until 2 or 3am! We have 842 miles to go to the entrance to
Opua bay.
