August 16

At dawn we gybed the main back to the port side and followed the new rhumb line to our waypoint off Motu One, the Westernmost of the Society Islands (we do not intend to stop). At 10am we are motor sailing to charge batteries in about 11k wind from the ENE. We are making 6-7k over ground. The seas are lumpy at about 4ft from the NE and the skies are clear.

During the day we tried tacking North then South again so we would not have to go dead downwind. By 3pm however the wind had died to 7-8k and we were making only 3.5k and getting slammed about by the swells. It is now 4pm local time (Tahiti time - UTC -10) and we are now motoring on a course of 274M making 6.5-7k over ground. We still have 588nm remaining to Suvarov and have covered 112 miles since yesterday at this time (02:00UTC).

For anyone reading this real-time on the web site, if you have access to a HF or Shortwave radio, or you are a Ham radio operator, you can listen to the Pacific Seafarer's Network on 14.313mhz daily at 03:25UTC (8:25pm Pacific Time, 11:25pm Eastern Time). The program consists of a "roll call" of vessels underway. Each vessel gives their position, weather conditions, speed and direction of travel. If you are a Ham operator, please wait for the Net control to ask for incoming traffic for the Queen Jane and then contact us! Our call sign is KG4JSU and our turn on the roll call comes late (as we are one of the last boats on the roll) at about 04:00UTC.

The evening was pleasant with winds in the 10-15k range. We sailed on a broad reach with the wind about 140 degrees off the bow, this game us a very comfortable heading for sleeping in the swell. It was a beautiful evening with lots of stars. Jonah came into the cockpit before bed and looked up at the stars and said "Hey Dad! I can see the Milky Way!".
